Mid-December marks the beginning of the best time to thrift all year round. Why, you may ask? Well, as an employee of Goodwill Industries of Eastern Nebraska and Southwest Iowa, I know that around this time we experience a huge increase in donations. This is for one simple reason: customers donate their unwanted goods that they’ve been meaning to donate all year in the last few weeks of December in order to see their charitable donations on their taxes.

And that’s what makes late December through January the best time to shop. The stores are absolutely flooded with donations, calling on the assistance of shoppers everywhere to buy buy buy!

This past year has been a time of tremendous growth for our Goodwill. We successfully relocated our administrative and retail operations, opened a new retail and computer store and relocated more than 150 employees. All done within a nine month time period and all accomplished with precise planning, ongoing communication, care and effective leadership. Thank You!

There were plenty of planning meetings, budget talks, and contract signings. We took part in pit crews, press conferences and plenty of media interviews. We cleaned out offices and storage rooms. We packed, stacked, stored and transported more boxes than we care to count.

Special thanks here to Goodwill’s truck drivers, who were terrific about efficiently getting us into our new location.

It’s time to breathe a sigh of relief. We are fully operational and the growth of our mission has definitely made it all worthwhile. We have two beautiful new buildings giving us the opportunity to grow for the next 50 years. What a great gift we have been able to give our employees and the community, and just in time for the holidays. I commend you for your contribution to Goodwill’s success in 2010. We have much to celebrate and even more to anticipate.

I want to remind everyone to be careful as you travel during the holiday season. The event will be much more festive if you arrive safely. Remember, the roads can be difficult at this time of year, so be vigilant!
