Huskers #TBT on #ThriftyThursday

Did you know that Goodwill operates an online store?  Shop Goodwill hosts really unique items, and you can shop from the comfort of your home, or work, or mobile device.  This week, Shop Goodwill has some really cool older Husker items, just in time for Nebraska’s homecoming game against Illinois.

#ThriftyThursday – Toys on a budget

This Thrifty Thursday post was guest-written by Goodwill’s Community Development Manager Elizabeth Donner.  The post guest stars her cute daughter, Amelia.

Anyone who has kids probably has a love-hate relationship with toys like I do.  Toys can be fun and entertaining for your child . . . well, at least for a while.  They can also be terribly expensive and of course, the more expensive they are, the quicker your kid loses interest in them.  Right?!?

I have found that buying toys second-hand is the way to go.  I never feel guilty about buying a toy and am saving a TON of money in the process.

This week I went in search for a deal on toys.  I was at Goodwill in Council Bluffs off of Madison Avenue and found a number of toys at great prices.

The VTech – Touch and Teach Turtle and Leap Frog’s Learn and Groove Alphabet Drum both retail on Amazon for $19.99.  Both were marked at Goodwill for $1.99 each!

Playskool’s Poppin Ball toy was only $.99 at Goodwill and retails new for $12.99.

The Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Vacuum Cleaner retails on Amazon for $26.99 and was priced at Goodwill for $2.99.

Each of these toys would have been a good option for my daughter, but I had to pick just one.  I went with the vacuum cleaner.  I think she liked it.

Vintage #ThriftyThursday

Oftentimes on #ThriftyThursday, I find myself focused on brand-names.  I pull an item and I think, “If I bought this at the mall today, it would cost five times what I’d pay for it at Goodwill.”

And that’s awesome.  But this week, I’m going in a different direction.

One of the best things about Goodwill is the ability to find things that you can’t buy in a mall.  The things that your grandma just took out of the back of her closet.  The things that will make you stand out in a crowd.  These three outfits use older pieces to create a new look.

vintage dress

These three looks are perfect for the office or out with friends, and are great seasonal transition pieces.

On the left, we have a chambray blouse from The Limited.  It’s ’90s chic, so boarderline vintage, and super cute.  The chambray is thick, so the blouse will keep you warm in the fall.  Roll the sleeves up for warmer days, add a scarf if it’s chilly.  The skirt is from BCBG.  Pairing old and new work great with this ensemble, especially when the whole outfit is less than $10.

In the middle, a very ’70s print dress features great fall colors.  For only $.99 this dress would be great into winter with the addition of some thick tights.

Last, this colorblock dress is on-trend, with prefect colors and the right shape for fall.  The look would be great paired with a thick belt, but stands out on it’s own.  For less than $5, it’s a good staple piece for any wardrobe.

Look unique with Goodwill this season – happy hunting!
