Affordable Friday — KMTV/Morning Blend — 2/26/16

Mary Nelson, co-anchor for KMTV’s Morning Blend Show, is an avid Goodwill shopper!
With that in mind, we’ve recently partnered with Mary and KMTV on “Affordable Friday” segments!  Throughout the year, Mary will shop at one of Goodwill’s retail facilities to find great items to wear on-camera.  Her first stop was at Goodwill’s 156th & Maple retail store. With each shopping excursion, Mary’s goal is to see what great finds she can buy with a $30 Goodwill gift card.
Today (2/26/16) was the first of five “Affordable Friday” segments that will air during KMTV’s Morning Blend Show throughout the year.

Ultimate Road Trip Playlist

Spring Break is just around the corner and if you’re planning on going somewhere, you need the ultimate playlist to make it through your travels without going insane. Some people prefer to plug in their phone or MP3 player and just go from there, but I’m a fan of the classic method – listening to CDs. Yes, I still listen to CDs! Crazy, isn’t it? I love CDs because they have some history and it really allows you to learn to enjoy a certain artist because, let’s face it, once you put a CD in, you’ll probably be too lazy to take it out if you don’t like all of the songs.

Although CDs have become a thing of the past, you can still purchase them at your local thrift store! Goodwill is my favorite place to buy CDs because you never know what you’ll find. When I was in high school and got my first car, my cousins and I would spend hours on end inside Goodwill going through the music area just to see what we could find and could listen to on our road trips to the lake. The best part about Goodwill CDs: they’re very affordable! With a spring break road trip coming up on my calendar, I figured that it would be a great idea to go check out my local Goodwill and see what CDs I could find to entertain me on my 10 hour road trip!

Camp Rock Soundtrack

Camp Rock was High School Musical’s little cousin that wasn’t necessarily as popular. Everyone in college has seen Camp Rock at least once and can definitely sing along to the catchy tunes. This CD is great because there is a variety of artists and it only has 12 songs so it isn’t necessarily that long!

Now That’s What I Call Music! 5

The Now That’s What I Call Music CDs are some of the greatest ones out there. It’s a compilation of multiple artists and their greatest songs of that time. This particular volume has songs from Aaron Carter, the Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, and Destiny’s Child.

Shania Twain Greatest Hits

You will be singing your heart out once you put this CD in to play. Shania’s greatest hits album is pure gold and easily one of the most sing-along worthy albums out there. Everyone obviously enjoys singing  Man! I Feel like a Woman! or That Don’t Impress Me Much at the top of their lungs!

The Lizzie McGuire Movie Soundtrack

The Lizzie McGuire Movie is one of my favorites solely because of it’s awesome soundtrack. I found the Lizzie McGuire Movie Soundtrack at my local Goodwill and can’t wait to sing along with Hilary Duff on my car ride.

Now That’s What I Call Music! 19

I really scored the jackpot when I found this CD. Now That’s What I Call Music! 19 may be my favorite CD of the entire set. It has a variety of artists including Gwen Stefani, Will Smith, Eminem, and The Killers. You can spend a few hours belting out to great songs without hearing the same artist twice.

Now that you have your road trip playlist stacked with great tunes, you’re ready to go! Load up the car and grab your friends for an unforgettable spring break that starts will the epic road trip playlist and a trip to your local Goodwill.

Spring Fashion Trends at Goodwill

Fashion Week Season is upon us. I am obsessed with fashion and this week is like a holiday in my eyes. I love seeing all the new trends and appreciate them like they’re art. Despite that, I know for a fact that I can’t afford the exact looks that are on the runway. This is where Goodwill comes in. My local Goodwill store has a lot of this year’s spring fashion trends hidden in their racks of clothing. The best part about it; I can afford everything I find! Check out some of the latest spring 2016 fashion trends I found at my local thrift shop.

70s Inspired Gear

The 70s were a great time period to experiment with fashion. If you’ve ever watched That 70s Show or The Brady Bunch, you have an idea of what to expect when it comes to these pieces. Search for distinct and earthy patterns like the one on this skirt or crochet tops like the one above and you’ll be looking groovy!

Some things never change. Loafers are still in style and I have a feeling they will never really be out of style. This comfortable form of footwear can be worn to work or a night on the town. They’ll always look good and be comfortable!

Denim, denim, denim

What is there to say about denim? Everyone loves denim. It goes with anything and can be worn in many different forms. This skirt is perfect to wear on a fun day with your friends or even dress it up and wear it to work. It is now trendy to wear a denim shirt with denim bottoms, so let your obsession show!

Orange is the New Black

If you’ve seen Legally Blonde, you know that Elle Woods is not a fan of the color orange. Well Elle, your thoughts will probably change after this years Spring Collections. Orange is a new power color that will help you stand out. This orange top is a perfect example of a top to wear to work!

Mad for Plaid

It is safe to say that I am mad for plaid. Almost half of my wardrobe consists of plaid so I am very happy that this style is trending in 2016. Pair this plaid skirt with a simple sweater or button up, or wear this shirt with a cool pair on jeans and you’ll be looking like you came fresh off the runway!

Crazy for Lace

Lace is so delicate and beautiful, it’s exciting to see it trending in 2016. Pair this cute lace shirt with a plaid skirt or pair of jeans and you’re ready for a fun day with your friends.

Spanish Influence

A surprising trend this year is a Spanish influence. Look for clothing with bold patterns (middle), ruffles (right), or wild flowers (left) and you’ll be adding a lot of spice to your wardrobe!

See, it’s not hard to stay trendy without breaking the bank! Head over to Goodwill and let your shopping excursion begin, you never know what you’ll find!

This will be a true test of your skills and knowledge to see if you really understand your significant other’s style. The anticipation building up to the big reveal will lead to lots of fun and wanting peak to see what’s going on with your person. Goodwill has a wide variety of clothing for every personality, you’re sure to find something! Once you have your outfit picked out for one another, stow them away while you get the rest of your supplies for your Valentine’s Day of fun and reveal them right before you check out!

Find your favorite childhood VHS or DVD

Picking out your favorite childhood movie from Goodwill’s wide selection tells a lot about your personality and your childhood. After you have dinner in your hand picked outfits, cuddle up on the couch and watch your favorite childhood movies. Make some popcorn and enjoy each other’s company while reminiscing on old times. Goodwill has a large selection of different movies and you never know what you’ll find. With such a wide variety, it’ll be hard to pick just one! The real question, however, is are you a Disney Princess or Pokémon fan?

Pick out a gag gift

Everyone loves a good gag gift. You don’t need to limit yourself to a work or family gift exchange to partake in the giving and receiving a hilarious gift. Pick out a gag gift for your significant other for under $5. It can be anything you want it to be, as long as it makes you (and hopefully your significant other) laugh. Goodwill has some great gag gifts. This item will be a great piece of memorabilia for this special Valentine’s Day, so make it as awesome as possible.

Useful gag gifts

End your trip with a walk through the board games/games section

You’ll feel nostalgic as you walk through this section and see all the games you used to play as a kid.  Pick out your favorite board games, buy them, and play them to end your Valentine’s Day date. Goodwill’s game and toy section will truly bring a sparkle to your eye. You’ll spend hours laughing while playing Hungry, Hungry Hippos and Monopoly.

Purchase all of your items (clothes, movies, games) and head out to dinner, or even better, buy some plates and utensils at Goodwill and have a home cooked meal! Enjoy your night with your significant other while reminiscing on the old, simpler times and growing up.

If you didn’t know what to do for Valentine’s Day, you certainly do now. Grab your significant other and bring them to your local Goodwill; it’s sure to be a Valentine’s Day you’ll never forget.

Goodwill Scavenger Hunt

Does the snowy and cold weather make you sad? Does it seem like summer will never come and you’ll never see the sun again? Are you constantly asking yourself what you can do when the weather makes your face hurt? Try a Goodwill Scavenger Hunt! It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours and a little competition always makes things more exciting. It’ll be a fun experience for the whole family!

Before heading to your local Goodwill, make a list of random items that you can find at thrift stores. There’s a sample at the end of this post to give you some ideas! The list can range from a specific article of clothing to a VHS tape that you watched when you were a kid. You should include about 20 – 30 items so you’ll be spending a good part of your day at the store. Each person can either have the same or a different list, depending on how ambitious you’re feeling. If you want to make it even more exciting, allow your scavenger crew to go to multiple stores in order to complete their list. Once your lists are made up, give it to each participant and head over to your local Goodwill to let the games begin!

The goal of the scavenger hunt is to find each item, take a picture of it, and be the first one to finish your list. The winner can receive a prize of your choice or just have the satisfaction of knowing they won.
