Sector Training Expands Mission Focus at Goodwill Omaha

Over the spring months of 2018, Goodwill Omaha developed a sector training program based on multiple community needs. The Mission Advancement team identified a nationally recognized retail training. After research was done it was determined that the training would be a good fit for the new program. At Goodwill we have a unique benefit of having access to our retail stores. This access provides real, on-the-job training in a real-life setting.

With the initial curriculum was built, we determined that a defined classroom space to practice these skills while teaching them would be very beneficial—in turn we created a mock retail store located in our headquarters building.

“We had a great trainer, Jen Driscoll. She developed the curriculum, trained and tested participants by working one-one-one with them daily. Jen made sure the program participants were successful and supported at all times” says Christine Aguilar, Director of Mission Training.

Our Employment Ready program assisted with the job readiness curriculum and our Business Solutions program worked with the participants during their training to identify employment goals. Employment Ready and Business Solutions worked together to achieve permanent employment opportunities for the participants.

“After reviewing the first cohort, we are very excited with the successful results and we plan to provide this training on an ongoing basis. We are also exploring other potential referral sources to expand the number of participants served” says Aguilar.  

Results

The first training class started on May 7, 2018 and concluded June 1, 2018. All four program participants successfully obtained certification. Two of the participants have secured full time employment. The other two participants are actively interviewing with local employers. Goodwill’s Business Solutions team continues to assist the participants with the employment and retention support.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to learn new skills and learn more about the operations of a retail store. I would one day like to own my own small retail store to provide fashionable items for women of all sizes,” said Michelle, one of the four program participants.

The new program is just one of many ways that Goodwill Omaha is proudly serving members of our community by changing lives through education, training, and work.

“We are looking forward to offering another class in the coming months,” says Aguilar.

Sector training opportunities are available to those in the community who desire training to increase their employability in order to secure employment.

Kim Streit, A Story Behind the Store

Whizzing by with clothing in hand and a smile on her face, Kim Streit works hard to keep a clean sales floor full of fresh product at the 180th and Q Goodwill store. Kim is an ever positive 29 year old who was born with a cognitive learning disability. Having been born and raised in Gretna, Nebraska—Kim is blessed with a loving and supportive family who strives to go the extra mile to make sure she is provided opportunities to succeed in life.

Kindness is one of Kim’s strong suits, you will likely never catch her in bad mood, or without a smile on her face. Unfortunately, her kindness was also been taken advantage of in the past, which added a level of difficulty in building her social skills as she grew older.

“Socializing has never been one of Kim’s strong suits, but working at Goodwill has helped her come out of her shell,” says Denise, Kim’s mother.

Throughout her retail training in the Work Experience Program and her time working at Goodwill, Kim has made tremendous strides in her social interaction skills and has become much more personable.

Goodwill’s partnership with Kim came to fruition when she was enrolled in the Work Experience Program in August of 2006. For many, the Work Experience Program is the first step toward successful job placement through supportive training in our retail stores. During Kim’s time in the program, she learned vital skills in a supportive classroom setting and gained exposure to a real work environment in Goodwill’s retail stores.

Upon graduating from the Work Experience Program in March of 2009, Kim went on to part time work at Lucky-D’s Tack Shop in Gretna. To help with a smooth transition from student to employee, Kim was partnered with a job coach from Career Solutions through the Ollie Webb Center Inc. The job coach helped Kim become acclimated to her new surroundings and adapt to her new set of responsibilities.

Kim’s time at Lucky-D’s came to an end after the summer of 2009. Soon after Kim applied for a position at the 180th & Q Goodwill store. She was hired as a part time employee after interviewing with Janelle Ellis, who was the Store Manager at the time of Kim’s hire.

“While interviewing Kim, she smiled the entire time and I knew she could add so much value to our team with her can-do attitude and bright personality. She was going to fit in well with our team dynamics and make us even stronger. I just had to hire her! She was, and still is, a ray of sunshine. Kim started at Goodwill with her job coach from Career Solutions, my plan for her was to start off small and grow.  She first learned how to put away tank tops, then once she was a pro at that, she moved on to putting away tank tops and short sleeve shirts. We worked in each clothing category for a day or two, then added another category. In about two months, she knew how to put all clothing away by size, color and category. Once she mastered that, we began on fitting room recovery. She would check the fitting rooms between putting away each clothing rack.  She caught on quickly in each area. Her job coach was instrumental in her success as well as the rest of the Goodwill team. One doesn’t succeed without help from others, it takes a family to succeed. At first her job coach was coming in daily, then a couple times a week, then once a week. After about two months he approached me and stated that Kim told him he doesn’t need to come anymore. At that point we both knew that Kim had the confidence in her work and had adapted very well to the team. She was ready to do it all on her own,” said Janelle Ellis, who is now Assistant Director of Retail Sales at Goodwill. Kim has been a model employee at the 180th and Q store for eight years and will be celebrating her ninth anniversary with Goodwill on October 5, 2018. According to her current manager, Osama Rashan, “Kim arrives on time every day, works hard, and never calls in. Her current duties and responsibilities include greeting all customers, distributing processed clothing and household wares items and assisting customers with dressing rooms. Other duties that Kim helps with are cleaning the store and maintaining sales floor standards.”

“She is always willing to help where needed and has an amazing memory when it comes to scheduling. She even helps remind others of scheduling changes that occur.” says Osama.

“Structure is something Kim relies on in her life, she sometimes struggles with being flexible when unforeseen conflicts arise in her daily schedule.” says Denise, Kim’s mother.

As part of the mission of changing lives through education, training and work,  Goodwill is able to offer Kim the structure to strive in her daily work life and is able to help her embrace flexibility by the means of retail’s ever-changing environment. Kim is also able to focus on her strong suits of memorization and consistency when working in the store. Kim’s strengths support the ongoing success of the 180th & Q store.

Kim is currently focused on living well, eating healthy and getting involved in social atmospheres aside from work.

“I like to hangout with friends and play games, my favorite board game is Sorry. I also love to go bowling with friends and family,” said Kim.

According to Kim’s parents, Goodwill has been able to help Kim in many ways. These ways include assisting Kim in building her self worth and confidence, while providing a supportive setting for social interaction.  From a shy Work Experience student in 2006, to an outgoing employee today, Goodwill is proud to provide employment services to amazing people just like Kim. This is Kim’s story, just one of the many Stories Behind the Stores. Kim is an amazing young woman who has taken, and continues to take, steps to better herself—growing both personally and professionally.

Bikes for Block Party

We kicked off summer at the Ames Avenue Block Party on Friday, June 1 at Heartland Workforce Solutions, along with other community partners. This year was the fifth annual Ames Avenue Block Party—a community event created to promote Omaha 360’s Harmony Week. The event promoted peace, education, and a sense of community through diversity. Stakeholders, community agencies, and generous sponsors put forth efforts to reduce barriers and gave access to resources such as healthcare providers, financial institutions, workforce development agencies, and many other community agencies.

With close to 500 attendees, it was an evening filled with activities and opportunities to increase individual and family success. Goodwill Omaha was named one of the 2018 partner agencies. This partnership gave our Employment Ready team the opportunity to be heavily involved in the planning process. YouthBuild Omaha and Employment Ready had tables at the Ames Avenue Block Party and were able to assist individuals in the community and spread awareness of Goodwill’s mission.

Programs Working Together

Our retail stores supported the event by donating children’s bikes for a free raffle drawing that youth could enter the names in. Prior to the event, Work Experience Trainer, Steve Andrews and Work Experience students took time to make sure the bikes were in tip top shape before being raffled off. Students helped make sure the chains, brakes, and tires were all in proper working condition. Teamwork between our mission programs is essential at Goodwill. All of our programs assist each other in some way, working toward the advancement of our mission—changing lives and strengthening communities through education, training, and work.

On Wednesday, May 23, the Omaha metro came together to support local nonprofit agencies through Omaha Gives!—an event hosted by the Omaha Community Foundation. Omaha Gives! is a year-round, online giving campaign with the mission of growing community-based  philanthropic efforts in Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties. Each May, a 24-hour online giving event is held to celebrate nonprofits. All nonprofits in the Omaha metro from small startups to seasoned organizations are given the opportunity to participate and receive donations.

This year marked the 6th annual Omaha Gives! philanthropy event. Just this year alone, our community came together to support 970 nonprofits and raised over $7.4 million. Goodwill Omaha has participated in Omaha Gives! since 2013 and has raised over $125,000 total for our mission programs. During the 2018 Omaha Gives! campaign, Goodwill had 36 supporters who who generously donated over $9,800. The funds raised in 2018 will directly support our Employment Ready and Business Solutions programs.

Through these programs, we can serve anyone in our community, regardless of qualifying criteria, and help them prepare for and find meaningful employment. Anyone in need of employment assistance in the Omaha Metro area can come to Goodwill and receive assistance.

Programs Supported

Employment Ready staff provided nearly 17,000 services to program participants in the past year- ranging from practice interviews, to criminal history abatement, to employability skills before and after hire.

Business Solutions is the second program related to this initiative. Business Solutions takes the same approach as Employment Ready, but focuses those efforts on employers, rather than job seekers. Our Business Solutions staff specializes in identifying the hiring needs in our city, and matching those needs with the people we serve.

Employment Ready and Business Solutions staff work together seamlessly within Goodwill.  Employment Ready values the job development efforts that Business Solutions maintains in the community, as it allows them to concentrate on job readiness.  Business Solutions needs work-ready people to fill employer needs. We’ve designed these two programs so that they operate in a connected but independent way—providing the best services to people and businesses alike.

Sector Training Program Eliminating Job Barriers For Those Who Desire Employment

Goodwill Omaha’s new Sector Training Program helps eliminate barriers among those underemployed and unemployed in the Omaha metro. The new Sector Training Program makes it possible for all Goodwill Omaha locations to be more integrated with our mission. The new program will include Retail, Facilities Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance , and Custodial Training. All these trainings make use of our long-standing expertise in skill-building and employment assistance, as well as our numerous year of experience in those fields.

Retail

A comprehensive four-week retail training, featuring a combination of classroom training and hands-on job training at Goodwill retail locations. This training delivers skill-building and employment assistance services in the caring environment of our retail stores. Trainees will be supported throughout their time at Goodwill, from their hours learning in the classroom to their hands-on training on the sales floor.

At Goodwill, we have nearly 85 years of retail experience.

Facilities Maintenance

A comprehensive five-week custodial training, featuring approximately 20 classroom training hours and 80 hours of hands-on job training at Goodwill locations. Trainees will be supported throughout their time at Goodwill, from their hours in the classroom to their hands-on training at our properties.

At Goodwill, we have nearly 15 years of facilities maintenance experience.

Grounds

Goodwill is offering a comprehensive four-week grounds maintenance training, featuring approximately 10 classroom training hours, and 70 hours of hands-on job training at Goodwill locations. Trainees will be supported throughout their time at Goodwill, from their hours in the classroom and to their hands-on training at our properties.

At Goodwill, we have nearly 15 years of grounds maintenance experience.

Custodial

A comprehensive four-week custodial training, featuring approximately 10 classroom training hours and 70 hours of hands-on job training at Goodwill locations. This training makes use of our long-standing expertise in skill-building and employment assistance, as well as our nearly 30 years of custodial experience. Trainees will be supported throughout their time at Goodwill, from their hours in the classroom to their hands-on training at our properties.

Find Your Future Career Fair Hosted by Goodwill Omaha

On Thursday, May 10, Goodwill Omaha hosted a semi-annual community career fair with 37 local employers. The Find Your Future career fair took place at Goodwill Omaha’s headquarter location off 72nd and Ames in Omaha, NE. The semi-annual career fair was open to anyone looking for employment in the Omaha metro and surrounding communities.

Opportunities For Jobseekers

Find Your Future Career FairThe Find Your Future career fair gave jobseekers the opportunity to meet with a multitude of employers in one location. Jobseekers were instructed to bring a resume and dress to impress as many employers conducted on the spot interviews. Goodwill’s Employment Solutions services were also offered to the 205 jobseekers who attended the career fair. Employers such as Jimmy John’s, Nebraska Furniture Mart, and Lyman-Richey Corporation were all actively scheduling interviews. Employers seemed to be very happy with the career fair. Mutual of Omaha stated “We never miss this event.” and Lozier said “The flow of traffic was wonderful and we got a lot of great applicants.”

FYF Jobseekers“The event went very smoothly, it was great to see so many jobseekers connecting with employers and leaving with smiles on their faces. It was also great to see all of the employers meeting with candidates and taking the first step in filling their needs.” said Melanie Smith, Business Solutions Specialist. All proceeds from the career fair directly support sector training opportunities to the community at no cost to individuals.

Good Turn for Goodwill

During the month of April, Goodwill Omaha partnered with Girl Scouts of Nebraska for the annual Good Turn for Goodwill donation drive.  Throughout April, Girl Scout troops went into the Omaha Metro, Fremont, Lincoln, and Norfolk communities to collect donations from the public. Troops then dropped of the donations at their local Goodwill Omaha location. This year marked the 33rd year for the Good Turn for Goodwill donation drive.

This year, 13 troops including 183 scouts participated—making more than 75 donations to Goodwill Omaha. That’s approximately 3,000 pounds of donated goods collected from the community. In years past Goodwill has given bags to help collect donations. For this year’s drive, Goodwill Omaha decided to be more environmentally conscious. By forgoing bags and encouraging scouts to make bagless donations, Goodwill can help keep waste out of the landfills. We find it important for the scouts to understand that we care about the environment. Donations are not required to be given in a bag or box. Donations can simply be dropped off at any Goodwill donation center.

Event sponsors included: Amazing Pizza Machine and Papio Fun Park. Troops were chosen at random to receive prizes that consisted of $100 Amazing Pizza Machine gift cards and $50 Sonic gift cards. All scouts who participated were sent a “Good Turn for Goodwill” badge and certificates for a free game of mini golf at Papio Fun Park.

Mission Support

All donated materials collected during the drive will be sold in Goodwill Omaha’s 14 retail stores. Each time you shop or donate at a Goodwill retail store, the revenue generated is used to support the not-for-profit agency’s employment and training programs for individuals with disabilities and other disadvantages. Through training and employment opportunities, Goodwill assists the community’s economy by creating wage earners as well as consumers. Thanks to our customers and donors, 1,797 people were enrolled in a Goodwill program in 2017. In addition, Goodwill program participants were placed in 230 jobs during 2017.

Employment Ready Helps Students Find Business Casual Attire 

During the last week of March, Megan Sharpe, Goodwill Omaha’s Employment Ready Manager, received a phone call from Rebecca Dunn who teaches at Ralston High School. Dunn is currently teaching a Future Teacher Internship program. The class focuses on preparing students for future interviews and internships. Goodwill Omaha’s Employment Ready program was asked to partner with the Ralston High School class to provide assistance in how to choose appropriate attire for interviews and internships.

Teaming Up

Sharpe met with the class on April 16 to share how Employment Ready provides free one-on-one job readiness services to those unemployed or underemployed in the Omaha Metro.  Sharpe also spoke about proper business casual attire and how to find this clothing at our Goodwill locations. This partnership was an opportunity to educate the youth in the Ralston and Papillion community—by sharing Goodwill Omaha’s mission programs and how our retail stores support those programs.

The next day Sharpe met the Future Teacher Internship class at our Papillion retail store (84th and Giles).

Megan also took time to remind students of the importance in making a great first impression during an interview. The students were encouraged to shop on their own. Sharpe and Dunn offered guidance and support—ensuring students were choosing appropriate business casual options.

Finally, all 17 of the Future Teacher Internship students walked away with business casual outfits for their upcoming interviews.

Each student was given a $20 gift card, which was provided by both Ralston High and Goodwill Omaha. This gave students the ability to find a full outfit. Also showing them how beneficial shopping at Goodwill is while on a tight budget. The students enjoyed the hunt for unique and trendy items they may not have normally found at other retailers. While using the provided gift cards, students were educated on how donating and shopping at Goodwill Omaha supports our mission programs such as Employment Ready.

Sustainability For A Greener Earth

On April 18 Goodwill partnered with Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart and hosted an electronics drive at the Duchesne campus from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Goodwill Omaha was contacted in February by Duchesne’s Sustainability Committee about donating a large amount of electronics.

Jason Schlesiger, Director of Technology at Duchesne said “Our Sustainability Committee saw this drive as an opportunity to recycle as much as possible. We wanted to take our efforts from inside the school into the surrounding community. This electronics drive benefits not only Duchesne but also our neighbors.”

Eric and Jason from Duchesne's Sustainability CommitteeIn 2016, Duchesne was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an Energy Star Award recipient. “When Duchesne was recognized with the Energy Star Award, generous community donors offered to underwrite the Verdis Group, a local sustainability consulting firm. The donations supported our partnership with the Verdis Group who spent a year with Duchesne to analyze our processes and help us move forward in efforts of sustainability” said Eric Krakwoski, Assistant Principal of Duchesne Academy. Eric stated that their Sustainability Committee has 4 main goals.

  1. Be a zero waste campus by 2030
  2. Use net positive energy by 2030
  3. Revamp the schools lunch program
  4. Integrate sustainability into the schools curriculum

Goodwill Omaha helped approximately 30 donors and collected 4,900 pounds of electronic equipment during the drive. Dell Reconnect is a program that partners with Goodwill’s across North America to handle proper refurbishing or recycling of your computer systems and accessories. Since 2004, Dell Reconnect has recycled more than 450 million pounds of used electronics. Goodwill Omaha contributes roughly 40,000 pounds of that number each year. Goodwill Industries Celebrates 115 Years of Changing Lives

During the week of May 6, 2018 we will be celebrating Goodwill Industries Week—along with 115 years of building better futures and changing lives. Goodwill Industries Week was first celebrated in May of 1951. It is a way to encourage local Goodwill organizations to educate their communities about their missions. At Goodwill Omaha our mission is to change lives through education, training, and work—by serving individuals and businesses in eastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa.

Hand-Up Not a Hand Out 

In 1902 Reverend Edgar J. Helms went from door to door in Boston asking not for money, but for clothing in need of repair. Helms employed people facing challenges by having them mend the clothes for a daily wage. By selling those clothes back to the community, Goodwill’s mission was born. Helms believed in giving people a chance, not charity. He also believed there is more dignity in receiving a hand-up, not a hand-out. When people learn the skills to earn their own pay checks they have the power to transform lives and communities. Goodwill has grown from humble origins into an international non-profit organization. We provide employment placement, job training services and other important services to millions of people.

Goodwill Omaha’s Programs and Services

While programs and services have changed over the years, our mission of changing lives through education, training, and work has stayed true. Below are programs and services Goodwill Omaha currently provides.

  • Ability One – Provides part-time job opportunities for individuals with disabilities in a supportive and integrated work environment at several federal properties.
  • Business Solutions – Meets the needs of local employers by connecting them with quality applicants and providing ongoing support.
  • Employment Ready – Provides free one-on-one job readiness services to anyone who is unemployed or under-employed in the Omaha metro, Council Bluffs, or Fremont areas.
  • Hire Nebraska – Puts Nebraskans to work as they transition from public assistance to life-changing employment.
  • Work Experience – Offers high school special education students, who are nearing completion of high school education, an opportunity to gain exposure to a work situation in a supportive environment.
  • Volunteer & Community Service –  We thrive on the support of our community and those who volunteer their time. Providing the opportunity to complete approved court ordered hours of service is another way we support those in our community.
  • YouthBuild Omaha – A national education, leadership, development, and occupational skill-training program for disadvantaged young adults. YouthBuild is a proud partner of the American Job Center Network.

In 2017, Goodwill Omaha served 1,797 people through our mission programs. Hosting a total of 35 hiring events—230 jobs were found by Goodwill participants. The average hourly wage of Goodwill participants placed in jobs was $12.16. Through our programs and services, we are able to continue our mission of changing lives through education, training, and work.
