Memories of PAC

As we prepare to leave our Pacific Street headquarters, we’ve asked people to share their memories of the building that has served as Goodwill’s Omaha home for the past 50 years.

Being downstairs in the START and EF programs, we had great camaraderie that will never be matched! We all shared many tears and laughter with each other through all different phases of our lives.

We knew we could count on each other to cheer each other on, bring humor to lighten our sometimes heavy loads, encourage, and learn from each other and to be there in whatever was needed for each other at the time both professionally and personally.

I will always cherish those years and hold them close to my heart.

Quite a number of years ago, we won an award thru NISH for overall excellence regarding our custodial services at Offutt.

Because the award truly belonged to the folks actually doing the work, we decided to recognize our NISH crew in a very creative and dramatic way.

As you know, many NISH participants normally come here in the afternoon and wait for vans to take them on base. When we first started providing the transportation, we used school buses.

But on a day following the notification of our award, a whole convoy of limousines lined up in our drive and parking lot to take the AbilityOne crews to work in style. Then awaiting them upon their arrival was a special pizza party. The looks on their faces when they saw the limos – and then when they learned that the limos were for them! – is something I’ll never forget.

Certainly an exciting – and unexpected – day for them. And a memorable day for all of us who witnessed it.

My favorite PAC memory began in October 1990. I remember walking in the front door and got a whiff of freshly baked cookies. The aroma was enough to make my toes curl. As I walked further, I would inhale that oh so wonderful sugary butter smell.

The aroma grounded me and it was so hard to move forward. It smelled like Christmas and happiness and warmth and that was just the sugar cookies. The chocolate chip cookies with all that chocolate was enough to send me over the edge…in becoming a cookie-holic. I knew I needed help. The huge cookies were priced at 20 cents each or 3 for 50 cents. Some days you were able to buy a bag of broken cookies for 50 cents. Ahhhhhhhh the good old days!!!

I had been working for Goodwill for less than a year, when I went to the back room to pick up my mail. I met the UPS man at the corner, where he dropped his box and said “You better take care of that,” pointing to a snake on the floor.

I don’t like snakes – no matter if they are big or small. I went to my boss, who promptly climbed up on her chair and refused to help. Luckily one of the Work Experience students picked it up and took it outside.

I still check the the floor first before I pick up my mail!

Updates on the new headquarters

Our new headquarters at 72nd & Ames is coming together, as you can see below. The top is what it looks like now. The bottom is the rendering from the architects.

Here you can see where exterior blocks have been removed, leaving room where the windows will go.

This is the beginning of the structure that will eventually be the retail store’s corner entrance tower.

Move Update: April

Welcome to our monthly Goodwill moving update. Here’s what’s happened since we left you last month. Meetings. That’s right. Meeting after meeting after meeting.

The smaller committees have met. The bigger committees have met. We’ve met with construction companies, architects, technology companies and interior designers. Oh…and phone companies. And moving companies. And all sorts of other people. It really hasn’t been that exciting. Unless you like meetings. If you like meetings, it has been awesome.

Of course all these meetings are for the purpose of planning. Which is good. We need a pretty good plan to pull off something this big. We are getting closer and closer to the move, and we need to have some idea of what the heck we are going to do. Thanks to these meetings, that picture gets clearer by the day.

We also have some updates on construction. We were just approved to begin construction on the new Retail Operations Center. Changes will be underway immediately, as the plan is to be in that building by June 1. We are still waiting for approval for the first wave of construction at our new headquarters, but we hope to be ready to go in 4-6 weeks.

So there you have it. A lot of meetings and the beginning of construction. It doesn’t sound like much, but the groundwork we lay in the spring will make for successful moves in the summer.

Move Update: March

Look out! Goodwill is moving. Most of you know this already, but we want to keep everyone in the loop. So this is your monthly update on all our latest relocation plans, and here’s what we have done so far:

1) Formed Committees
Anyone worth their salt knows that the first step in getting anything done is to form committees. We formed eight. From telephones, to moving vans, to cubicles, if it’s related to our move we have a committee for it.

2) Toured Other Facilities
Our committees have looked at Child Savings Institute and The Omaha Cathedral Conference Center in the past two months. Both of these facilities were recently renovated, and the tours provided valuable information on the design and decoration decisions that lie ahead for Goodwill.

3) Interviewed Other Goodwills.
Each of our committees has contacted a Goodwill from another part of the country which has moved recently. These sister agencies were able to provide important logistical feedback for the months ahead.

We will be offering continued updates in the months ahead, but in the meantime, think of the Clothes Line staff as your go-to resource for any move-related questions you might have. If we don’t have the answer, we will move heaven and hell until we find it.

Drop us a line ([email protected]), or call us up (402-522-7225), with any and all of your moving questions and concerns.
