Spring Into Your New Look

Spring Into Your New Look

Spring is here and we will be seeing brighter days soon—though it may not seem true with this unpleasant April weather. Nonetheless it is time to start unpacking our spring clothes. You’ll most likely want to take some time to analyze your wardrobe. Are you holding onto garments that have served you well but now need a new home? What pieces are you missing from your selection to update your look? Today we’re going to share our newest addition to our Look Book—giving you some inspiration on how to update your spring wardrobe.

Spring Forward and Let Go.

Many of us hold onto things much longer than needed. Realizing what can go and what can stay in your closet will help you assess your needs for the upcoming seasons. The blog post Closet Hacks: How to Know When It’s Time to Donate Your Clothes gives you some good ideas on how to easily say goodbye to that pair of denim that you haven’t worn in two years. There’s probably at least one item in all of our closets that we haven’t touched in quite some time. Is it really worth keeping or could you benefit from something new in its place? This is the perfect time to evaluate your wardrobe and take out the old to bring in the new.

For those who are environmentally conscious—donating to Goodwill will keep your clothing out of the landfills. By donating to any of Goodwill’s conveniently located donation centers, you are directly supporting our programs in the community. Click here to find a donation center in your neighborhood.

Plus, you won’t feel so guilty come next year when you’re ready to move on to something else. You’ll be able to get a handful of items at the same price as one new item at the mall.

There are plenty of savvy shoppers out there who take full advantage of thrift markets. Likewise, we suggest you join in on the fun and savings. It’s Time For The Boo!dwill Halloween Costume Contest

The BOO!dwill Halloween Costume Contest won’t stay dead, nor should it! Because it’s that time a year again when you need to start thinking “Halloween costume” and “Goodwill” in the same sentence!

Goodwill is an awesome place to shop for Halloween costumes. Are you someone who likes to dream up some creative outfit and enjoys the hunt for just the right pieces? We have fifteen stores around town where you can find those costume ingredients. Or are you someone who just wants a quick and easy costume so you’re not the person dressed up as “suburbanite” or “adult” at the Halloween party? We’ve got plenty of more traditional costumes too! And no matter which camp you fall into, your costume purchases at Goodwill stores help put people to work — and they can win you some treats.

We want to see what you’ve come up with by shopping at our stores, so it’s time show off your costume and win prizes in the process — by entering the BOO!dwill Halloween Costume Contest!

To enter:
1. Between now and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, e-mail a photo of yourself in a costume you either purchased or assembled from items purchased at an Omaha area Goodwill to [email protected].

Updated: This years contest will be based on Facebook likes. Please visit the Boo!dwill 2017 Facebook Album and like your favorite costume. Only “likes” will determine our winner, shares and comments are not needed in order to win.

2. In the email, tell us your name, how to contact you, and at which store(s) you bought your costume.

That’s it! We’ll be sharing the entries as we receive them on our Facebook wall. On Monday, November 6, 2017, the voting will close, and the top three will all receive Goodwill gift certificates ($100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd, $25 for 3rd)!

If you have any questions, post them here in the comments or send us an e-mail at [email protected]. And if you’d like some inspiration, check out 2015 finalists or television coverage of some of our Halloween offerings:

All Bark and No Bite: Goodwill® Deals for Dog-Lovers

Since pets are members of the family, too, it only makes sense that we want to pour as much effort into their needs as we do into our own. That means that we’re often tempted to customize their accessories to suit their furry little personalities. So, today we’ll be sharing some drool-worthy doggy decor and dressings made from Goodwill finds!

Photo 1

Big ugly dog beds can be such an eye-sore, but owners often cringe to think that their darlings have to curl up on the hard floor. What’s a person to do? Well, make a place for Rover to sleep that looks as cute as it does cozy. For inspiration, check out this round-up put together by blogger Landeelu. I can’t decide which one is my favorite, but I’ve narrowed it down to either the Goodwill dresser that has been hollowed out into a nook for bigger dogs or the bed for small dogs that’s made from a thrifted sweater. Which one would your doggo dig the most?

There are plenty of options for dog collars out there, but they all mostly follow the same bland design—nylon webbing with a plastic buckle. If the color and pattern variation of that sort of collar have never been stylish enough for your best friend, why not dress up their dog tags with a fancy DIY collar? Make your mutt her his or her own quirky collar by shopping the kids’ section of Goodwill in search of a button-down shirt in a pattern you like. Snip out the collar of the shirt, attach tags, and button it around your pup’s neck! Thanks to Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Louisiana (New Orleans) for sharing this great idea on their DIY Goodwill Finds Pinboard. Click through for even more easy thrift-craft ideas like this one.

Doggy decor is a fun way to capture our love of our best friends within the context of our homes. These little ceramic pups shared by Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona (Tucson) on their Facebook page would make perfect paperweights or decorative accents. As you browse Goodwill’s shelves on your next visit, keep a look out for figurines of your favorite breed. And don’t let a terrible paint job stop you! Thrifted finds can be quickly covered up with a fresh color for customized decor. (Psst! If you’re in the Tucson area, make sure you click through to your local Goodwill’s Facebook page to get the details for the Dress Your Pet Contest which runs through August 31st!)

Hopefully these ideas will send you and your hound off into the weekend with tails wagging. While you shop for project supplies, don’t forget that your support helps Goodwill organizations change lives by training unemployed or underemployed people for careers in fields such as automotive services, construction, health care, information technology, manufacturing, hospitality and retail as well as in other high-demand industries. So, have fun with your dog-themed DIYs as you and your pup benefit your local community.

Spring Has Sprung! Rejuvenate Your Look with Fresh Finds at Goodwill®

Each new season is a chance for a refresh and, like the world outside that is bursting with buds and blooms, a colorful revamp can rejuvenate your home on the inside, too. With Easter right around the corner, here are some new springtime ideas for your halls, walls and wardrobe, too.

Image via stayingclosetohome.com

This upside-down wine glass Easter display that I found on Goodwill Industries of Fort Worth’s (TX) Easter Headquarters Pinboard is both brilliant and beautiful. I can’t believe I’ve never thought of this! Functioning now as both a terrarium-type display and a tea-light holder, this thrifted stemware gets a whole new use. It’s darling with Easter grass and candy eggs inside, but I’m also picturing themed arrangements of seashells in the summer, fallen leaves for autumn, and — dare I say it? — tinsel and ornaments when winter rolls around again. It’s lovely as a table centerpiece, but it could also cheerfully greet guests on an entry hall table.

Kimberly from A Night Owl blog did a lovely DIY round-up, too! Her post 10 Spring and Easter Goodwill Projects has so many sunny ideas inspired by this vibrant season. This floral thrifted picture frame display gives a backyard party such a whimsical touch, but can you imagine it inside on a wall, too? What a fun way to brighten up your home for a brunch. I can’t think of a better place to snap a selfie. Click through for more ideas and to get a better look at the floral frame display. Goodwill® is an entrepreneurial leader, environmental pioneer and social innovator in the “reduce, reuse, repurpose” practice, and these reimagined frames are the perfect example of that.

Whether you work hard to stay in style or you’re feeling stuck in a rut, you’ll love these tips from Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina (Greenville)’s blog. Its Spring Fashion: How to Look Luxe on a Budget post has some easy rules that will inspire your shopping, not stifle it. My favorite? Save on clothing, splurge on accessories. Why? To get the most use possible out of a high-priced item, it has to be something you can wear every day this spring. You can only don a cute dress or skirt once a week without raising eyebrows, but a designer bag, shoes or jewelry can be worn again and again.

In the ensemble above, Dulce has thrifted a shirt several sizes too large and belted it as a dress. Grabbing a great deal on clothing items frees up your budget for higher-priced accessories. Of course, don’t forget to check the shoe section as well as under the counter at Goodwill. Designer items get donated all the time, so there’s a chance you could save money by thrifting this whole outfit!

What are your favorite spring home and style insights this season? Do you have any great ideas for Easter decor or bright wardrobe updates? However you choose to celebrate the season, enjoy!

12 Days of Goodwill Christmas – Finding the perfect outfit for family pictures

My son turned one in October and I wanted to get family pictures to celebrate his birthday, and also use the pictures for our holiday cards.  I had been searching stores like Target and Kohl’s for the perfect outfit, but just couldn’t come up with anything.  Then one day I was in the 72nd and Ames Goodwill when I came across a plaid vest.  It was so cute – black and red checkers with a tan collar.  The vest was only 99 cents.  Once I saw it, I knew this was the outfit for family pictures!  I paired the vest with a white onzie and jeans.

Spring Fashion Trends at Goodwill

Fashion Week Season is upon us. I am obsessed with fashion and this week is like a holiday in my eyes. I love seeing all the new trends and appreciate them like they’re art. Despite that, I know for a fact that I can’t afford the exact looks that are on the runway. This is where Goodwill comes in. My local Goodwill store has a lot of this year’s spring fashion trends hidden in their racks of clothing. The best part about it; I can afford everything I find! Check out some of the latest spring 2016 fashion trends I found at my local thrift shop.

70s Inspired Gear

IMG_4961IMG_4960

The 70s were a great time period to experiment with fashion. If you’ve ever watched That 70s Show or The Brady Bunch, you have an idea of what to expect when it comes to these pieces. Search for distinct and earthy patterns like the one on this skirt or crochet tops like the one above and you’ll be looking groovy!

Loafers

IMG_4967

Some things never change. Loafers are still in style and I have a feeling they will never really be out of style. This comfortable form of footwear can be worn to work or a night on the town. They’ll always look good and be comfortable!

Denim, denim, denim

IMG_4964

What is there to say about denim? Everyone loves denim. It goes with anything and can be worn in many different forms. This skirt is perfect to wear on a fun day with your friends or even dress it up and wear it to work. It is now trendy to wear a denim shirt with denim bottoms, so let your obsession show!

Orange is the New Black

IMG_4959

If you’ve seen Legally Blonde, you know that Elle Woods is not a fan of the color orange. Well Elle, your thoughts will probably change after this years Spring Collections. Orange is a new power color that will help you stand out. This orange top is a perfect example of a top to wear to work!

Mad for Plaid

IMG_4962IMG_4963

It is safe to say that I am mad for plaid. Almost half of my wardrobe consists of plaid so I am very happy that this style is trending in 2016. Pair this plaid skirt with a simple sweater or button up, or wear this shirt with a cool pair on jeans and you’ll be looking like you came fresh off the runway!

Crazy for Lace

IMG_4958

Lace is so delicate and beautiful, it’s exciting to see it trending in 2016. Pair this cute lace shirt with a plaid skirt or pair of jeans and you’re ready for a fun day with your friends.

Spanish Influence

IMG_4966IMG_4968IMG_4965

A surprising trend this year is a Spanish influence. Look for clothing with bold patterns (middle), ruffles (right), or wild flowers (left) and you’ll be adding a lot of spice to your wardrobe!

See, it’s not hard to stay trendy without breaking the bank! Head over to Goodwill and let your shopping excursion begin, you never know what you’ll find!

Goodwill Scavenger Hunt

Does the snowy and cold weather make you sad? Does it seem like summer will never come and you’ll never see the sun again? Are you constantly asking yourself what you can do when the weather makes your face hurt? Try a Goodwill Scavenger Hunt! It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours and a little competition always makes things more exciting. It’ll be a fun experience for the whole family!

dreamstimemaximum_32067780

Before heading to your local Goodwill, make a list of random items that you can find at thrift stores. There’s a sample at the end of this post to give you some ideas! The list can range from a specific article of clothing to a VHS tape that you watched when you were a kid. You should include about 20 – 30 items so you’ll be spending a good part of your day at the store. Each person can either have the same or a different list, depending on how ambitious you’re feeling. If you want to make it even more exciting, allow your scavenger crew to go to multiple stores in order to complete their list. Once your lists are made up, give it to each participant and head over to your local Goodwill to let the games begin!

The goal of the scavenger hunt is to find each item, take a picture of it, and be the first one to finish your list. The winner can receive a prize of your choice or just have the satisfaction of knowing they won.
