On Wednesday, May 23, the Omaha metro came together to support local nonprofit agencies through Omaha Gives!—an event hosted by the Omaha Community Foundation. Omaha Gives! is a year-round, online giving campaign with the mission of growing community-based philanthropic efforts in Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie counties. Each May, a 24-hour online giving event is held to celebrate nonprofits. All nonprofits in the Omaha metro from small startups to seasoned organizations are given the opportunity to participate and receive donations.
This year marked the 6th annual Omaha Gives! philanthropy event. Just this year alone, our community came together to support 970 nonprofits and raised over $7.4 million. Goodwill Omaha has participated in Omaha Gives! since 2013 and has raised over $125,000 total for our mission programs. During the 2018 Omaha Gives! campaign, Goodwill had 36 supporters who who generously donated over $9,800. The funds raised in 2018 will directly support our Employment Ready and Business Solutions programs.
Through these programs, we can serve anyone in our community, regardless of qualifying criteria, and help them prepare for and find meaningful employment. Anyone in need of employment assistance in the Omaha Metro area can come to Goodwill and receive assistance.
Employment Ready staff provided nearly 17,000 services to program participants in the past year- ranging from practice interviews, to criminal history abatement, to employability skills before and after hire.
Business Solutions is the second program related to this initiative. Business Solutions takes the same approach as Employment Ready, but focuses those efforts on employers, rather than job seekers. Our Business Solutions staff specializes in identifying the hiring needs in our city, and matching those needs with the people we serve.
Employment Ready and Business Solutions staff work together seamlessly within Goodwill. Employment Ready values the job development efforts that Business Solutions maintains in the community, as it allows them to concentrate on job readiness. Business Solutions needs work-ready people to fill employer needs. We’ve designed these two programs so that they operate in a connected but independent way—providing the best services to people and businesses alike.

During the month of April, Goodwill Omaha partnered with Girl Scouts of Nebraska for the annual Good Turn for Goodwill donation drive. Throughout April, Girl Scout troops went into the Omaha Metro, Fremont, Lincoln, and Norfolk communities to collect donations from the public. Troops then dropped of the donations at their local Goodwill Omaha location. This year marked the 33rd year for the Good Turn for Goodwill donation drive.

This year, 13 troops including 183 scouts participated—making more than 75 donations to Goodwill Omaha. That’s approximately 3,000 pounds of donated goods collected from the community. In years past Goodwill has given bags to help collect donations. For this year’s drive, Goodwill Omaha decided to be more environmentally conscious. By forgoing bags and encouraging scouts to make bagless donations, Goodwill can help keep waste out of the landfills. We find it important for the scouts to understand that we care about the environment. Donations are not required to be given in a bag or box. Donations can simply be dropped off at any Goodwill donation center.
Event sponsors included: Amazing Pizza Machine and Papio Fun Park. Troops were chosen at random to receive prizes that consisted of $100 Amazing Pizza Machine gift cards and $50 Sonic gift cards. All scouts who participated were sent a “Good Turn for Goodwill” badge and certificates for a free game of mini golf at Papio Fun Park.
All donated materials collected during the drive will be sold in Goodwill Omaha’s 14 retail stores. Each time you shop or donate at a Goodwill retail store, the revenue generated is used to support the not-for-profit agency’s employment and training programs for individuals with disabilities and other disadvantages. Through training and employment opportunities, Goodwill assists the community’s economy by creating wage earners as well as consumers. Thanks to our customers and donors, 1,797 people were enrolled in a Goodwill program in 2017. In addition, Goodwill program participants were placed in 230 jobs during 2017.
