Story Behind the Store – A Gender Reveal Party

It is not every day that Goodwill hosts a gender reveal party for an expectant mother. On March 7, 2019, that is exactly what happened at Goodwill’s WearHouse store on 72nd & F where long-term customer Arelys Sandoval revealed the gender of her next child to her family, friends and fellow shoppers.

Shantel Featherson, Goodwill’s WearHouse Manager, was honored to be part of the special occasion. “We were so excited to be part of this special moment for one of our long-time customers. We were able to help celebrate with great people, good food and games,” said Shantel. Shantel took time out of her busy day to plan the party and purchase decorations to make this day extra special for Arelys.

Arelys’ brother, Rodrigo, introduced her to the WearHouse store over eight years ago and she has been a regular shopper ever since. The WearHouse store is a different kind of shopping experience. Items not sold at the traditional retail stores are sent to the WearHouse and most items are sold by the pound.

Arelys is a stay at home mom and sees her daily trips to Goodwill as a way to make new friends who enjoy shopping at the WearHouse as she does. Arelys says the friendly and helpful employees at Goodwill make her daily shopping there a memorable experience. “I really appreciate the environment at Goodwill, everyone is so nice!” said Arelys.

The Goodwill staff, shoppers and family members

Sandoval’s favorite things to shop for are clothes and toys for her son Ivan. A budding entrepreneur, she enjoys shopping for books that she resells on eBay and Amazon. “I always find great stuff!” said Arelys.

When asked what advice she would give people shopping at the WearHouse, she stressed the need for patience. You must dig for hidden treasures in the bins.  Arelys said, “I prefer Goodwill because of the prices. You can buy by the pound and it’s cheaper so you can get more.”

Arelys said her gender reveal party is by far the fondest memory she has of all her trips to Goodwill. The WearHouse staff looks forward to her bright, cheery and pleasant demeanor every day!
Goodwill is grateful for Arelys sharing her special day with us.

We appreciate her loyalty to Goodwill and cannot wait to meet the newest addition to her family.
Goodwill supports community needs and provides a unique shopping experience for customers like Arelys who has become a member of Goodwill’s extended family!

And the gender was… A BOY!!!

It’s Time For The Boo!dwill Halloween Costume Contest

The BOO!dwill Halloween Costume Contest won’t stay dead, nor should it! Because it’s that time a year again when you need to start thinking “Halloween costume” and “Goodwill” in the same sentence!

Goodwill is an awesome place to shop for Halloween costumes. Are you someone who likes to dream up some creative outfit and enjoys the hunt for just the right pieces? We have fifteen stores around town where you can find those costume ingredients. Or are you someone who just wants a quick and easy costume so you’re not the person dressed up as “suburbanite” or “adult” at the Halloween party? We’ve got plenty of more traditional costumes too! And no matter which camp you fall into, your costume purchases at Goodwill stores help put people to work — and they can win you some treats.

We want to see what you’ve come up with by shopping at our stores, so it’s time show off your costume and win prizes in the process — by entering the BOO!dwill Halloween Costume Contest!

To enter:
1. Between now and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, e-mail a photo of yourself in a costume you either purchased or assembled from items purchased at an Omaha area Goodwill to [email protected].

Updated: This years contest will be based on Facebook likes. Please visit the Boo!dwill 2017 Facebook Album and like your favorite costume. Only “likes” will determine our winner, shares and comments are not needed in order to win.

2. In the email, tell us your name, how to contact you, and at which store(s) you bought your costume.

That’s it! We’ll be sharing the entries as we receive them on our Facebook wall. On Monday, November 6, 2017, the voting will close, and the top three will all receive Goodwill gift certificates ($100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd, $25 for 3rd)!

If you have any questions, post them here in the comments or send us an e-mail at [email protected]. And if you’d like some inspiration, check out 2015 finalists or television coverage of some of our Halloween offerings:

Goodwill Scavenger Hunt

Does the snowy and cold weather make you sad? Does it seem like summer will never come and you’ll never see the sun again? Are you constantly asking yourself what you can do when the weather makes your face hurt? Try a Goodwill Scavenger Hunt! It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours and a little competition always makes things more exciting. It’ll be a fun experience for the whole family!

dreamstimemaximum_32067780

Before heading to your local Goodwill, make a list of random items that you can find at thrift stores. There’s a sample at the end of this post to give you some ideas! The list can range from a specific article of clothing to a VHS tape that you watched when you were a kid. You should include about 20 – 30 items so you’ll be spending a good part of your day at the store. Each person can either have the same or a different list, depending on how ambitious you’re feeling. If you want to make it even more exciting, allow your scavenger crew to go to multiple stores in order to complete their list. Once your lists are made up, give it to each participant and head over to your local Goodwill to let the games begin!

The goal of the scavenger hunt is to find each item, take a picture of it, and be the first one to finish your list. The winner can receive a prize of your choice or just have the satisfaction of knowing they won.
