Kick off the summer with the Ames Avenue Block Party!

Kick off the summer with the Ames Avenue Block Party – June 1

Bring your families and help us kick off summer at the Ames Avenue Block Party! Please join us on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Heartland Workforce Solutions at 5752 Ames Avenue.

The Ames Avenue Block Party is a community event created to promote Omaha 360’s Harmony Week. The event promotes peace, education and community by bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders to reduce barriers in accessing resources such as healthcare providers, financial institutions, workforce development agencies, as well as many other community agencies. These agencies will engage in positive activities with youth and families throughout the event.
Many thanks are in order to Boys Town and Heartland Workforce Solutions for leading and hosting the event efforts for the past five years. Year-over-year attendance has increased from 300 to over 1,000 participants.

Now in its fifth year, we are proud to announce our 2018 partner agencies: North Omaha Adolescent Health, Heart Ministries, the Hope Center for Kids and Goodwill Industries.

Join us and enjoy free activities such as bounce houses, balloon artists, face painting and a variety of other opportunities – provided by our generous sponsors: First National Bank, Bank of the West, United Health Care and Centris Federal Credit Union.

Our on-site food vendors and other in-kind sponsors include Godfathers Pizza, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Big Mama’s Kitchen, Hardy Coffee Company, Jimmy John’s, Chick-fil-a, Raising Cane’s, and Frito-Lay.

Stop by the Goodwill Industries table to enter a raffle! Ten children’s bikes will be raffled off during the event, you must be present to win. Also, stop by the YouthBuild Omaha table to learn more about one of Goodwill’s many mission programs and hear about all of the great service the AmeriCorps members are providing in our community.

The goal of the Ames Avenue Block Party is to decrease community violence while increasing overall individual and family success.

Thank you to all of the service providers in attendance who link families to necessary supports and services within the North Omaha community.

It’s Time For The Boo!dwill Halloween Costume Contest

The BOO!dwill Halloween Costume Contest won’t stay dead, nor should it! Because it’s that time a year again when you need to start thinking “Halloween costume” and “Goodwill” in the same sentence!

Goodwill is an awesome place to shop for Halloween costumes. Are you someone who likes to dream up some creative outfit and enjoys the hunt for just the right pieces? We have fifteen stores around town where you can find those costume ingredients. Or are you someone who just wants a quick and easy costume so you’re not the person dressed up as “suburbanite” or “adult” at the Halloween party? We’ve got plenty of more traditional costumes too! And no matter which camp you fall into, your costume purchases at Goodwill stores help put people to work — and they can win you some treats.

We want to see what you’ve come up with by shopping at our stores, so it’s time show off your costume and win prizes in the process — by entering the BOO!dwill Halloween Costume Contest!

To enter:
1. Between now and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, e-mail a photo of yourself in a costume you either purchased or assembled from items purchased at an Omaha area Goodwill to [email protected].

Updated: This years contest will be based on Facebook likes. Please visit the Boo!dwill 2017 Facebook Album and like your favorite costume. Only “likes” will determine our winner, shares and comments are not needed in order to win.

2. In the email, tell us your name, how to contact you, and at which store(s) you bought your costume.

That’s it! We’ll be sharing the entries as we receive them on our Facebook wall. On Monday, November 6, 2017, the voting will close, and the top three will all receive Goodwill gift certificates ($100 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd, $25 for 3rd)!

If you have any questions, post them here in the comments or send us an e-mail at [email protected]. And if you’d like some inspiration, check out 2015 finalists or television coverage of some of our Halloween offerings:

Goodwill Scavenger Hunt

Does the snowy and cold weather make you sad? Does it seem like summer will never come and you’ll never see the sun again? Are you constantly asking yourself what you can do when the weather makes your face hurt? Try a Goodwill Scavenger Hunt! It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours and a little competition always makes things more exciting. It’ll be a fun experience for the whole family!

Before heading to your local Goodwill, make a list of random items that you can find at thrift stores. There’s a sample at the end of this post to give you some ideas! The list can range from a specific article of clothing to a VHS tape that you watched when you were a kid. You should include about 20 – 30 items so you’ll be spending a good part of your day at the store. Each person can either have the same or a different list, depending on how ambitious you’re feeling. If you want to make it even more exciting, allow your scavenger crew to go to multiple stores in order to complete their list. Once your lists are made up, give it to each participant and head over to your local Goodwill to let the games begin!

The goal of the scavenger hunt is to find each item, take a picture of it, and be the first one to finish your list. The winner can receive a prize of your choice or just have the satisfaction of knowing they won.
