Goodwill Scavenger Hunt

Does the snowy and cold weather make you sad? Does it seem like summer will never come and you’ll never see the sun again? Are you constantly asking yourself what you can do when the weather makes your face hurt? Try a Goodwill Scavenger Hunt! It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours and a little competition always makes things more exciting. It’ll be a fun experience for the whole family!

Before heading to your local Goodwill, make a list of random items that you can find at thrift stores. There’s a sample at the end of this post to give you some ideas! The list can range from a specific article of clothing to a VHS tape that you watched when you were a kid. You should include about 20 – 30 items so you’ll be spending a good part of your day at the store. Each person can either have the same or a different list, depending on how ambitious you’re feeling. If you want to make it even more exciting, allow your scavenger crew to go to multiple stores in order to complete their list. Once your lists are made up, give it to each participant and head over to your local Goodwill to let the games begin!

The goal of the scavenger hunt is to find each item, take a picture of it, and be the first one to finish your list. The winner can receive a prize of your choice or just have the satisfaction of knowing they won.

#ThriftyThursday – The Secret is Out, Goodwill Has it All

Don't Spill The Beans for $1.99 at Benson Park Plaza

Don’t Spill The Beans for $1.99 at Benson Park Plaza

One of my favorite sections to browse at Goodwill is the board game shelf. There is nothing I enjoy more than spending a weekend night playing different board games and competing to win as many as I can. The best part? Board games can be fun for anyone – ages 1 to 99.

I was browsing through the Benson Park Plaza store and the 1986 classic game “Don’t Spill the Beans” caught my eye, for only $1.99.  The point of the game is to get as many beans into the pot without shaking the pot and spilling the beans. This game would be perfect for the kiddos to play together and after looking through the description I think I might want to jump in and play!

After snapping some pictures of “Don’t Spill the Beans” I was approached by a customer who seemed to know exactly what I was doing; writing for The Good Times Blog. We started talking and she applauded all the great aspects of Goodwill. She told me that her favorite three places to shop were the Warehouse, the Benson Park Plaza store and finally online at ShopGoodwill, our online store. It’s always nice to hear great words about Goodwill, so thank you for talking with me Barbara!

Don’t take Barbara’s word for it, head to Goodwill today to find your very own treasure.

Mother’s Day is this Sunday – but don’t panic if you haven’t found the perfect gift yet.  Goodwill is here to help!

This name-brand bag is like-new and costs $59.99.  The stylish jacket, from Delia’s, was only $.99!

If you aren’t sure of your mom’s size, get her some jewelry!  All of stores have a wide selection, from statement pieces to timeless classics.  These necklaces cost $3.99 (bottom) and $5.99 (top).

Maybe your mom is more of a hobbyist.  Goodwill is a great place to find items to fit her needs.

This yarn, for the mom who knits, is only $1.99 a bundle.  A vast variety of cookbooks range in price, starting at $1.99.

Who doesn’t love a little salty and sweet snack?  While I wouldn’t recommend getting your mom ONLY candy, some chocolate and popcorn would be a great addition to your mother’s gift. 20140507_081251

Sometimes it can be difficult to decipher what moms really want.  Goodwill has the solution for that problem, too – gift cards!

Goodwill is the perfect place to find an awesome Mother’s Day present, because the proceeds of you purchase go to help our Employment and Training programs.  Mom can be proud to wear her new jacket or knit with her colorful yarn knowing that her gift will help someone in our community find a job and improve their life.  WOW your MOM on Sunday and get her a great gift with a great purpose!

#ThriftyThursday – Drive for Drives

In honor of our Drive for Drives being held today, in partnership with WOWT and Omaha West Rotary, I’m going to talk a little about our GoodBytes store.

Goodwill accepts used computes and computer equipment year-round at all of our stores and during special events, like today’s Drive for Drives.  After you donate, some of the items are recycled in a way that is safe for your personal information and for the environment, in partnership with the Dell Reconnect program.

The rest of these goods are cleaned up, hard drives are cleaned out, and software is updated.  The items that get refurbished are sold in our Goodbytes store.  Each day, new, quality merchandise is put on the shelves at Goodbytes.  You can find laptops, monitors, printers, keyboards, gaming systems – and dozens of other computer & electronic parts & accessories.  Computers are equipped with Windows 7 and upgraded memory.  With prices varying from $80-$200, you can’t find a better deal on a new-to-you computer.

Today, bring your old, unwanted computers & electronics to Drive for Drives, from 10-5:30 at Canfields on 85th and Center.  Then, head to GoodBytes at 72nd & F Street to pick yourself up a new laptop, gaming system, or wireless printer.  You donation and purchase will be good for you and great for the community!

#ThriftyThursday – it’s still cold out!

We can’t seem to break the cold snap here in Omaha.  The high today is supposed to be 14 degrees! But that’s alright, our Goodwill stores have your winter weather gear at a great price!  With a chance for snow and a low of zero degrees this weekend, you’ll want to make sure you have the proper gear to keep bundled and warm as you brave the Omaha tundra.

Let’s start with coats.  This faux-fur cropped coat by Esley will keep you warm and stylish for a night out.  And it’s only $7.99!  Pair it with a warm sweater and some fur-lined leggings to complete your cold-weather ensemble.

This long-length overcoat by Nine West is the perfect color to cheer up your winter blues.  At only $14.99, you can find some cute pants and stay warm while going to work.

This G.E.T. Anorak jacket is a perfect transition piece.  Its lining will keep you warm, but the material makes it a perfect spring coat as well.  This coat was found new with tags for only $9.99 at Goodwill.

If your style is more vintage, look no further than this deep orange wool  Billycoat.  The color will make a statement while keeping you warm in the coldest temps.  This is a piece that can stay in your wardrobe for years, and it’s only $14.99.

Sometimes it’s so cold that coats aren’t enough.  At Goodwill you can stock up on gloves, scarves, and boots to keep that chill away even longer.
